Our internal organs are asymmetric;
for example, the lungs share space
in the chest cavity with the heart and the great blood vessels.
The left lung has two lobes
and the right three. The major airways, the left and right bronchi, are
tilted at different angles.
Nigel Brown, a heart development
expert at St. George's Hospital Medical School in London, England says
that."the heart's
asymmetric design improves blood flow and makes it an extremely efficient
pump. The right side of
the heart is
smaller than the left, because it collects blood and only has to pump it
across to the lungs. The left side has to pump oxygenated blood all the
