2Kings
7:1 Then Elisha said, Hear you the word of God; Tomorrow about this
time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel and two measures
of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.
2Kings
7:2 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God
and said, Behold, if God would make windows in heaven, might this thing
be? And he said, Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not
eat thereof.
2Kings
8:7-15 And Elisha came to Damascus
and Benhadad the king of Syria was sick
and it was told him, saying, The man of God is come hither. And the king
said unto Hazael, Take a
present in your hand and go, meet the man of God and enquire of him, saying,
Shall I recover of this disease? So Hazael went to meet him and took a
present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels' burden.(it
took 40 camels to carry all the stuff).and
came and stood before him and said, Thy son.(a
respectful term used back then).Benhadad
king of Syria has sent me to you, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
And Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, You may certainly recover.
Howbeit God
has showed me that he shall surely die.(obviously
from some other cause later, but it came soon). And he.(Elisha).settled
his countenance stedfastly, until he.(Hazael).was
ashamed.(Elisha
knew Hazael's intent to get rid of the king somehow). And
the man of God wept. And Hazael said, Why weep my lord? And he answered,
Because I know the evil that you will do unto the children of Israel.(Elisha
knew Hazael hated the nation of Israel and that when he had done away with
the king Benhadad, he would occupy the king's position and set things up
to destroy Israel). Their.(ancient
Israel's).strong holds will
you set on fire and their young men will you slay with the sword and will
dash their children and rip up their women with child. And Hazael said,
But what, is your servant a dog.(in
other words, 'I am in no position where I could even think of such a thing'),
that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, God has showed
me that you shall be king over Syria. So he.(Hazael).departed
from Elisha and came to his master who said to him, What said Elisha to
you? And he answered, He told me that you should surely recover. And it
came to pass on the morrow, that he.(Hazael).took
a thick cloth and dipped it in water and spread it on his face, so that
he died.(forced
him to be drowned; Hazael figured that since Benhadad was going to die
somewhat soon anyway, it might as well be now and Hazael could reign as
king). And Hazael reigned in his stead.
2Kings
8:16 And in the fifth year of Joram
the son of Ahab
king of.Israel, Jehoshaphat
being then king of.Judah, Jehoram.(king
of Judah, also called Joram as in verse 24 below).the
son of Jehoshaphat king of.Judah.(so,
there was intermingling
between Israel and Judah here).began
to reign.
2Kings
8:17 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign and he
reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
2Kings
8:18 And he walked in the way of the
kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab,
for the daughter of Ahab
was his wife. And he did
evil in the sight of God.
2Kings
8:24 And Joram.(also
called.Jehoram.as
in verses 16 above and 25 below).slept
with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city
of David.(and
not with the honorable kings:.2Chronicles
24:16). And
Ahaziah.his
son reigned in his stead.
2Kings
8:25 In the twelfth year of Joram.(also
called.Jehoram;
both the Jehorams, that
of Israel and that
of Judah were called Jehoram/Joram).the
son of Ahab
king of.Israel.did
Ahaziah.(Judah
king).the son of Jehoram
king of.Judah.begin
to reign.
2Kings
8:26 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign and
he reigned one year in Jerusalem.
And his mother's name was Athaliah,
the daughter of Omri
king of Israel.
2Kings
8:27 And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in
the sight of God, as did the house of Ahab, for he was the son in law of
the house of Ahab.
2Kings
8:28 And he went with Joram.(Israel
king).the son of Ahab.(Israel
king).to the war against Hazael
king of Syria in Ramothgilead and the Syrians
wounded Joram.
2Kings
8:29 And king Joram.(Israel
king).went back to be healed
in Jezreel of the wounds which the
Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria.
And Ahaziah
