Matthew 9:1 And he entered into a ship and passed over and came into his own city.

Matthew 9:2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed. And Emmanuel seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer, your sins be forgiven you.
Matthew 9:2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed. And Emmanuel seeing.(you can tell from one's face if they possess faith; they have a radiant hope emanating).their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer, your sins be forgiven you.
Matthew 9:3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemes

Matthew 9:4-7 And Emmanuel knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think you evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Your sins be forgiven you or to say Arise and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has power on Earth to forgive sins, then says he to the sick of the palsy, Arise take up your bed and go unto your house.(a physical manifestation of God's power to reveal the spiritual). And he arose and departed to his house.

Matthew 9:8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

Matthew 9:9 And as Emmanuel passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom and he said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

Matthew 9:10 And it came to pass, as Emmanuel sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

Matthew 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eats your Master with publicans and sinners?

Matthew 9:12  But when Emmanuel heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

Matthew 9:13 But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy and not sacrifice.(a sacrifice always involved a victim). For I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Matthew 9:13 But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy.(Christ came in the physical individual of the One we call Emmanuel to be killed, so the mercy of the Creator would be upon all, this not being a sacrifice for something, as sacrifices were burnt up and then done with; Emmanuel was not done with, as He was just getting started and His life and death were more of a gift).and not sacrifice.(from Hosea 6:6). For I am not come to call the righteous.(those who feel they are fine just the way they are with all the self-righteous rules of some church they follow, their selfish desires and close-minded efforts based on greed {such as the ancients who knew God but didn't want anything to do with him.[Jeremiah 44:16,17], similar to many people today.and such were the religious leaders of Emmanuel's time:.Matthew 23rd chapter}, who were sure in their mind they were correct {Proverbs 14:12}, yet obviously are, as they say, 'out to lunch'), but sinners.(those who realize a change is necessary:.Luke 18:11-14).to repentance.

Repentance means wanting to change and that's what God in Christ came to do:.John 3:16,17.

Matthew 9:14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but your disciples fast not?

Matthew 9:15 And Emmanuel said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them and then shall they fast.

Matthew 9:16,17 No man puts a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up takes from the garment and the rent.is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles, else the bottles break and the wine runs out and the bottles perish, but they put new wine into new bottles and both are preserved..
Matthew 9:16,17 No man puts a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up takes from the garment and the rent.(a tear in it).is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles, else the bottles break and the wine runs out and the bottles perish, but they put new wine into new bottles and both are preserved.

Emmanuel is here talking of the old covenant (agreement) as compared to the new covenant.

Eclectic Notes: Emmanuel shows that you cannot mingle the prescriptions that flow from the old, now done away, Mosaic Law with the principles and power of divine.grace, a most important principle in the New Testament. What the Lord shows is, that even if you take what God once sanctioned under the law, it will not do now. The same God who dealt with Israel by using the Mosaic Law has sent the gospel and it is the gospel now that is important and not the law. It is grace that we have to do with in our lives:.Hebrews 4:13.

Barnes Notes:."Bottles, in eastern nations, were made and are still, of skins of beasts. Generally the skin was taken entire from a sheep or a goat and, properly prepared, was filled with wine or water. They are still used, because, in crossing deserts of sand, they have no other conveyances but camels or other beasts of burden. It would be difficult for them to carry glass bottles or kegs on them."

Matthew 9:18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler and worshipped.(meaing of worship).him, saying, My daughter is even now dead, but come and lay your hand upon her and she shall live.

Matthew 9:19 And Emmanuel arose and followed him and so did his disciples.
More details on this in Mark 5:22-43 and Luke 8:41-56.
Matthew 9:20 And, behold, a woman which was diseased with an issue of blood.(because of some reason she was constantly bleeding from somewhere).twelve years came behind him and touched the hem of his garment.

Matthew 9:21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment I shall be whole.

Matthew 9:22.Emmanuel turned around and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort, your faith has made you whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.(she started to get better).
Miracles of Emmanuel.
Matthew 9:23-25 And when Emmanuel came into the ruler's house and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, He said unto them, Give place, for the maid is not dead but sleeps. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in and took her by the hand and the maid arose.

Matthew 9:26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

Matthew 9:27 And when Emmanuel departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, You Son of David, have mercy on us.

Matthew 9:28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him and Emmanuel said unto them, Believe you that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

Matthew 9:29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith.(faith and belief).be it unto you.
'According to your faith' means 'how deeply are you persuaded':.Romans 4:21; 14:5, 'how deeply are you sure'? And why wouldn't an individual be deeply convinced of what God can do, what with all this information available for consideration. Is God real? Is the Bible true? How great is God? Has God given you an amazing gift so that you can really get all you want for self and for others?.John 10:10; 3John 1:2.
Matthew 9:30,31 And their eyes were opened and Emmanuel straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

Matthew 9:32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb.(unable to speak).man possessed with a devil.

Matthew 9:33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake and the multitudes marveled saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
Map of Israel at the time of Emmanuel.
Matthew 9:34 But the Pharisees said, He casts out devils through the prince of the devils.

Matthew 9:35 And Emmanuel went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Matthew 9:36-38 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then said he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest.(who's this?), that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
