Scripture Notes Old Testament

-Book of Jasher.(means 'upright').is referred to in Joshua 10:13. The.Book of Jasher.was probably a kind of national sacred songbook, a collection of songs in praise of the heroes of Israel, a 'book of golden deeds' a national anthology.(a collection of literary pieces, such as poems, short stories or plays; a miscellany, an assortment or a catalog, as of complaints, comments or ideas).

We have only two specimens from the book:
1) the words of Joshua which he spake to the Lord at the crisis of the battle of Beth-horon.(Joshua 10:12,13).and

2).'the Song of the Bow' that beautiful and touching mournful elegy which David composed on the occasion of the death of Saul and Jonathan:.2Samuel 1:18-27.

Other books, some long since lost or long removed from circulation, are also mentioned in the Old Testament.

-Serpent.who beguiled the first woman:.Easton's Bible Dictionary:."A real serpent was the agent of the temptation, as is plain from what is said of the natural characteristic of the serpent in the first verse of the chapter and from the curse pronounced upon the animal itself. But that Satan was the actual tempter and that he used the serpent merely as his instrument, is evident from the nature of the transaction, for although the serpent may be the most subtle of all the beasts of the field, yet it has not the high intellectual faculties which the tempter here displayed."

Angels can take any form 1, 2.

-Emerods: Bleeding piles known to the ancient Romans as mariscae and today as hemorrhoids.

-Haman: Comprised with.Easton's Dictionary:.the name Haman is of Persian origin and means, magnificent, the name of the vizier.(i.e., the prime minister).of the Persian king Ahasuerus.(Esther 3:1, etc.). He is called an "Agagite", as.Agag.was one of the titles of Amalekite kings and denotes that Haman was descended from the royal family of the Amalekites, the bitterest enemies of ancient Israel. Balaam a prophet, predicted that the Amalekites, even though they were one of the first nations on Earth, would perish as a people forever. Haman was the last of the Amalekite race. His parents were originally brought to Persia as captives taken in war. He plotted to have the ancient Jews eradicated:.Esther 3:13. The result of his plot was he was hanged on the gallows which he had erected for Mordecai the Jew:.Esther 7:1-10. And so ended the race of the Amalekites.

-Padanaram: The plain of Aram or the plain of the highlands, commonly regarded as the district of Mesopotamia.(map).lying around Haran.

-Shewbread: This bread consisted of twelve loaves made of the finest flour. They were flat and thin and were placed in two rows of six each on a table in the holy place before the Lord. They were renewed every Sabbath and had special instructions for baking this holy bread.(Leviticus 24:5-9).and those loaves that were removed to give place to the new ones were to be eaten by the priests only in the holy place.(see 1Samuel 21:3-6; compare Matthew 12:3,4). The number of the loaves represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also the entire spiritual Israel, 'the true Israel' and the placing of them on the table symbolized the entire consecration of Israel to the Lord and their acceptance of God as their God. The table for the bread was made of acacia wood, 3 feet long, 18 inches broad and 2 feet 3 inches high. It was plated with pure gold. Two staves, plated with gold, passed through golden rings, were used for carrying it.

Comprised with.Barne's Notes:."The law commanded that twelve loaves of bread should be laid on the table in the holy place in the ancient tabernacle, to remain a week and then to be eaten by the priests only. Their place was supplied then by fresh bread. This was called the shewbread."; again,.Leviticus 24:5-9.
David, fleeing from Saul, weary and hungry, had come to Ahimelech the priest and had found only this bread. David had asked it of him and had eaten it, contrary to the letter of the law:.1Samuel 21:1-6. It proved that in cases of necessity the laws did not bind a man; a principle which all laws admit. So the necessity of the disciples justified them in doing on the sabbath what would have been otherwise unlawful.

-Notes on Genesis 1:1
comprised from.Leopold's Notes.on 'without form and void':
By an outstanding double expression an almost onomatopoeic effect.(the formation or use of words such as 'buzz' or 'murmur' that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to, such as 'buzz' is an onomatopoeic word to describe the sound of bees).is secured to describe the utmost of an unformed and unshapen mass: 'waste' and 'void', original being 'tóhû wavóhû'.

Tóhû.('tohu', 'without form').is really a noun used as an emphatic.adjective, as is also of course, 'bóhû'.('bohu', 'void'). The verb 'it was', original is 'hayethah' and cannot bear the emphasis in a sentence where two such significant predicates follow.

It must merely serve as a copula. Consequently, all attempts to put into this verb some thought like: 'the Earth then was there', or 'lay thus for quite a time', are grammatically quite inadmissible. Now tóhû as such means originally unformedness and so can come to mean a 'waste' only in the sense of being not yet put into shape, not in the sense of having been laid waste by some catastrophe, as all those would postulate who try at every point to make room for geologic periods of development. All later usage of the word points in the same direction. It occurs once again with bóhû in.Jeremiah 4:23. The Earth was yet to be formed into the physical from frequencies.(*), for all ever and always will be frequencies.

Jabez: The Creator remained distant from Jabez.(1Chronicles 4:9,10) until Jabez called on Him, although the Creator darn well does what He wants, when He wants and to whom and how He so wishes! He downright.stopped Paul cold!

The Creator deals with each of us differently. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Jabez wanted God's hand to be upon him. God answered him. He will you too! but, if you too pray for God's hand upon you or for God to fill you with His Spirit.(His nature, His power, etc.), what are you going to do with it?

You may be the hose and the Spirit of God the water inside it and you may ask for more of God's Spirit and then see no difference. You may feel like a living contradiction to Ephesians 1:19. Why? You've asked for more of His Spirit. He always answers that:.Matthew 7:7-11 "Ask and it shall be given you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asks receives and he that seeks finds and to him that knocks it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

So where's the problem? God has answered! You know He has. He has increased the pressure inside the hose. But, hey, open the nozzle! Give opportunity.(Matthew 5:44).for it to flow:.Titus 2:7 "In all things showing yourself a pattern of good works....." Hebrews 10:24 "And let us consider one another to provoke.(original 'sharpen up, prod, urge', why?).unto love and to good works." Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
   Tabitha's example. More:.Ephesians 2:10; 1Timothy 2:10; 5:10; 6:18; 2Timothy 3:17); Titus 2:14; 3:8; 1Peter 2:12.

-Romans 13:1-8 "Let every soul.be subject unto.(Jeremiah 27:1-17) the higher powers. For there is no power but of God. The powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God and they that resist receive to themselves damnation.(as happened in an ancient high priest's life named Eli). For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Will you then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good and you will have praise of the same, for he is the minister of God to you.for good.(if they really are for good, as some are not and are totally given to evil as reported by Janet Ossebaard). But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he bears not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that do evil.(that is, those of a bad nature). Wherefore you must needs be subject, not only for wrath's sake.(you may get yourself into trouble), but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay your tribute.(taxes).also. For they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. For he that loves another has fulfilled the law.(what law?)."

1Peter 2:13,14 "Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether it be to the king, as supreme or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers.(watch your ass in life).and for the praise of them that do well."

But if those in positions of trust are not honorable and are avoiding punishement of evildoers and are in fact evildoers themselves, who also avoid praising those who are doing the best they can for others, then you're under no obligation to submit to these criminals at all. More:.1Peter 2:13,14.

1Peter 2:17-19 "Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully."
Hebrews 13:17 "Obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves. For they watch for your souls.(so, do they, are they, watching for your souls, that is, watching out for benefit of you and others or are they out to use you and rip you off and poison you all toward eventual death?.Matthew 7:16), as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy and not with grief..."
1Timothy 2:1,2 "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all Godliness and honesty."
Acts 23:1-5 "And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day. And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite you, you whited wall, for sit you to judge me after the law and command me to be smitten contrary to the law? And they that stood by said, Revilest you God's high priest? Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest for it is written.(where?.Exodus 22:28), You shalt not speak evil of the ruler of your people."
Acts 24:16 "And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God and toward men."

Barnes New Testament Notes.on this passage:."There were cases where it was right to resist the laws. This the Christian religion clearly taught and, in cases like these, it was indispensable for Christians to take a stand when the laws interfered with the rights of conscience and when they commanded the worship of idols or any moral wrong, then it was their duty to refuse submission.(ancient Daniel's example:.Daniel 6:1-24).

"The general principle will be seen to be, that we are to obey in all things which are not contrary to the law of love..The law of love includes you too.

"The higher powers:.The magistracy; the supreme government. It undoubtedly here refers to the Roman.magistracy and has relation not so much to the rulers as to the supreme authority which was established as the constitution of government.".Matthew 28:18.

"Christians should be subject to magistrates, as they have received their appointment from God as it were. As Christians, therefore, are to be subject to God, so they are to honour God by honouring the arrangement which he has instituted for the.good.government of humanity. There are many corrupt magistrates. Judgment is needed:.1Corinthians 6:2,3.

"Are ordained of God: This word 'ordained' denotes the ordering or arrangement which subsists in a military company or army. God sets them in order, assigns them their location, changes and directs them as he pleases. This does not mean that he originates or causes the evil dispositions of rulers, but that he directs and controls their appointment. By this we are not to infer:
1. that he approves their conduct; nor,
2. that what they do is always right; nor,
3. that it is our duty always to submit to them. Their requirements may be opposed to the law of God, which is the law of love and then we are to obey God rather than man:.Acts 4:13-23; 5:25-29. But it is meant that the power is entrusted to them by God and that he has the authority to remove them when he pleases.

"If they abuse their power, however, they do it at their peril and when so abused, the obligation to obey them ceases. It could not be and never was a question, whether they should obey a magistrate when he commanded a thing that was plainly contrary to the law of God.(what law of God?).

"The question was, whether they should obey a heathen magistrate at all. This question the apostle answers in the affirmative, because God had made government necessary and because it was arranged and ordered by his providence."

From.Adam Clarke's Commentary.by Gary Gallant:."Nothing can justify the opposition of the subjects to the ruler but overt attempts on his part to change the constitution or to rule contrary to law. When the ruler acts thus he dissolves the compact between him and his people; his authority is no longer binding, because illegal and it is illegal because he is acting contrary to the laws of that constitution, according to which, on being raised to the supreme power, he promised to govern. This conduct justifies opposition to his government; but I contend that no personal misconduct in the ruler, no immorality in his own life, while he governs according to law, can justify either rebellion against him or contempt of his authority. For his political conduct he is accountable to his people, for his moral conduct he is accountable to God, his conscience."
