-Ramothgilead:.American
Tract Society Bible Dictionary:."A
famous city in the mountains of Gilead; often called RamothGilead and sometimes
Ramath-Mizpeh or the Watchtower. It belonged to Gad, was assigned
to the Levites and became one of the cities of refuge beyond the Jordan
river. It was famous during the reigns of the later kings of Israel and
was the occasion of several wars between these princes and the kings of
Damascus, who had conquered it and from whom the kings of Israel endeavored
to regain it. Here Ahab
died, Joram
was wounded and Jehu
was anointed king of Israel."
-Rechabites:.comprised
from.Easton's
Bible Dictionary: the descendants of Rechab through Jonadab aka
Jehonadab, a chief of ancient peoples known as the Kenites. They belonged
to the Kenites.(Genesis
15:19-21), who accompanied the
children
of Israel into Palestine
and dwelt among them.
Moses had a Kenite woman
as partner:.Judges
1:16. Jael was the wife of "Heber the
Kenite":.Judges
4:17. Saul also
showed kindness to the Kenites:.1Samuel
15:6.
The main body of the Kenites
dwelt in cities and adopted settled habits of life.1Samuel
30:29. The area they occupied was a Canaanitish
city on the extreme south of the wilderness of Judah, the inhabitants of
which under king Arad, drove back the Hebrews, also called Israelites,
as they attempted to enter the promised land from Kadesh:.Numbers
32:11,12; 21:1. It was afterwards
subdued:.2Numbers
21:3. Its site is on a hill about fifteen miles south of Hebron.
Jehonadab forbade his descendants,
these Rechabites, to drink wine or to live in cities as he thought it best
for them to live a nomad
life. They were noted for their fidelity
to the old-established custom of their family in the days of Jeremiah:.Jeremiah
35:1-12. This feature of their character is referred to by the prophet
Jeremiah for the purpose of giving point to his exhortation
of what God told him to relate to the stubborn tribe of Judah. They are
referred to in Nehemiah 3:14
and 1Chrronicles 2:55.
Dr. Wolff in 1839 found in
Arabia, near Mecca, a tribe claiming to be descendants of Jehonadab and
recently a Bedouin tribe has been found near the Dead Sea who also profess
to be descendants of the same Kenite chief.

Notes:.Travelers
bear witness to the existence of a large tribe who represent themselves
as the descendants of the Rechabites. The prediction was also literally
fulfilled in the Rechabites being in some way incorporated into the tribe
of Levi.(Deuteronomy
10:8), whose office especially
it was to."stand
before".God,
that is, to be of the mind of God in helping others be that way also.
Rephidim:.was
an encampment of the Israelites between the wilderness of Sin.(Exodus
17:1).and
mount Sinai.(map),
where the people murmured
and God gave them water from the rock. Here also the Amalekites
attacked them and were defeated. It is thought to have been in the valley
now called esh-Sheikh, a day's march northwest of Sinai and near the western
border of the Horeb
group of mountains.
