Romans
16:1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the
church which is at Cenchrea.
Romans
16:2 That you receive her in the Lord, as becomes saints.(there
were many in all the churches Paul set up and later traveled again to,
that helped him very much).and
that you assist her in whatsoever business she may have need of you, for
she has been a succorer
of many and of myself also.

wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ. Greet
Mary, who bestowed much labor on us.

among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.

Notes: Salute here means to greet one another in an affectionate
manner, that is, treat each other with kindness and love and evince
those actions. The use of the word 'holy' here serves to denote
that Paul, who wrote this book
of Romans, intended it as an expression of Christian
affection. It was common, according to Justin
Martyr, for the early Christians to greet one another with a 'holy
kiss'.
The churches
of Christ, mentioned here, were churches in the vicinity
of the place where the apostle
wrote this epistle;
probably the churches particularly
in Achaia in southern Greece.
Adam
Clarke's Commentary:."In
those early times the kiss, as a token of peace, friendship and brotherly
love, was frequent among all people and the Christians used it in their
public assemblies, as well as in their occasional meetings. This was at
last laid aside, not because it was abused, but because, the Church becoming
very numerous, the thing was impossible. In some countries the kiss of
friendship is still common and in such countries it is scarcely ever abused,
nor is it an incentive to evil, because it is customary and common. Shaking
of hands is now substituted for it in almost all Christian congregations.".Hodge
Commentaries:."Christians
should express their mutual love in the way sanctioned
by the age and community in which they live."
Romans
16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine which you have learned.(they
learned how to love).and
avoid them.
Romans
16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord
Jesus Christ.(Emmanuel
the Christ), but their own belly and by good words and fair
speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Titus
1:10; 2John 1:7.
Romans
16:19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore
on your behalf. But yet I would have you wise unto that which is good and
simple
concerning evil.
Romans
16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.
The grace of our Lord
Emmanuel the Christ be with you. Amen.
Romans
16:22 I Tertius,
who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.
Romans
16:24 The grace of our Lord
Emmanuel the Christ be with you all. Amen.
Romans
16:25 Now to him that is of power to stablish.(Matthew
24:12).you according to
my gospel and the preaching of Emmanuel
the Christ,
according to the revelation of the mystery.(1Corinthians
2:7,9), which was kept secret since the world began,
Romans
16:26 But now is made manifest and by the scriptures of the prophets,
according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made
known to all nations for the obedience of faith.
Original
for word 'obedience' is 'hearkening',
meaning 'listening to give heed to', toward or for the purpose to apply
faith
in their own lives; God wants all to know Him (Jeremiah
31:34; 1Timothy 2:4) and wants
all to know what they can do with faith. Faith in what? Faith that the
gift God has provided to you will abundantly bring prosperity to you.
Faith that the gift actually does produce results.
Romans
16:27 To God.(word
'God' here refers to the great Invisible Intelligent Energy:.Revelation
4:9,10).only wise, be glory
through Emmanuel Christ for ever. Amen. <Written to the Romans from
Corinthus and sent by Phebe servant of the church at Cenchrea>
