Do not avoid the Sun, but break into a tan gradually as is commonly advised, such as, first day in the Spring you can take some time for the Sun. Do just 5-10 minutes. Vitamin D is produced in the skin from a cholesterol derivative, which is actually a type of hormone that circulates in the blood and signals to cells through a receptor when we are exposed to UVB radiation from the Sun.
