Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases.

Luke 9:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Luke 9:3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money, neither have two coats apiece.(why not two coats?.Matthew 10:10).

Luke 9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him. And he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

Luke 9:12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about and lodge and get victuals, for we are here in a desert place.

Luke 9:13-15 But he said unto them, Give you them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes, except we should go and buy meat for all this people. For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. And they did so and made them all sit down.

Luke 9:16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes and looking up to heaven, he blessed them and brake and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

Luke 9:17 And they did eat and were all filled and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

Luke 9:18-20 And it came to pass as he was alone praying his disciples were with him and he asked them saying Whom say the people that I am? They answering said John the Baptist but some say Elias and others say that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them But whom say you that I am? Peter answering said The Christ of God.

Luke 9:21 And he straitly charged them and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be slain and be raised the third day.

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself.(deny self the ways of ego living).and take up his cross daily.(what does this mean?).and follow me.

Luke 9:24 For whosoever will save.(word 'save' here means 'to preserve or rescue from danger, prosper, etc.).his life shall lose it, But whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it..(?)

Luke 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world and lose himself, or be cast away?

Luke 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory and in his Father's and of the holy angels.
See on at Mark 8:38.
Luke 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here.(that is, standing there with Him), which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God..(?)

Luke 9:28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he.(Emmanuel).took Peter and John and James and went up into a mountain to pray.

Luke 9:29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered and his raiment.(clothing).was white and glistering.

Luke 9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias

Luke 9:31 Who appeared in glory.(they appeared from the invisible Creator's realm).and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
Jamieson, Fausset, Brown Commentary: Moses represented the Old Testament law, Elijah {Elias} represented the prophets; both together comprised the whole testimony of the Old Testament Scriptures and the Old Testament saints.
Luke 9:32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep. And when they were awake, they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him.

Luke 9:33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Emmanuel, Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles, one for you and one for Moses.(head of the ancient law, now done away).and one for Elias.(Elijah, head of the ancient prophets); not knowing what he said.
He had limited comprehension of the implication of his words; that of, Peter just didn't realize that he was equating He who was before and far above Moses and Elijah, with the same level as them.
Luke 9:34-36 While he thus spake, there came a cloud and overshadowed them. And they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son. Hear him.(who is above all the ancients). And when the voice was past, Emmanuel was found alone. And they kept it close and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Luke 9:37-42 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech you, look upon my son, for he is mine only child. And, lo, a spirit takes him and he suddenly cries out and it tears him that he foams again and bruising him hardly departs from him. And I besought your disciples to cast him out and they could not. And Emmanuel answering said, O faithless and perverse.(they just didn't see things correctly:.2Timothy 3:5).generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer.(be patient with).you?.(there wasn't much time left for Him before His crucifixion).Bring you son hither. And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down and tare him. And Emmanuel rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child and delivered him again to his father.

Luke 9:42,43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Emmanuel did, he said unto his disciples,

Luke 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears, for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

Luke 9:45 But they understood not this saying and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Luke 9:46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Luke 9:47 And Emmanuel, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child and set him by him,

Luke 9:48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receives me and whosoever shall receive me receives him that sent me, for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

Luke 9:49 And John answered and said, Master we saw one casting out devils in your name and we forbad him because he follows not with us.

Luke 9:50 And Emmanuel said unto him, Forbid him not. For he that is not against us is for us.

Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

Luke 9:52,53 And sent messengers before his face and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
They didn't want to accomodate him just for one night as that might take away the lodging of multiple nights for someone.
Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, will you that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elias did.(1Kings 18:38)?

Luke 9:55 But he turned and rebuked them and said, You know not what manner of spirit you are of.

Luke 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save.(word 'save' here means 'to preserve or rescue from danger, to prosper', etc.:.John 3:16,17).them. And they went to another village.
Romans 12:18.

Just how does Emmanuel save?.Ephesians 2:5.

Luke 9:57 And it came to pass that as they went in the way a certain man said unto him Lord, I will follow you whithersoever you go.

Luke 9:58 And Emmanuel said unto him, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.
He was telling this man that, from one day to another, I don't where I'll be sleeping and if he wanted to join him, that he should be aware of that, because it would be the same for him.
Luke 9:59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

Luke 9:60 Emmanuel said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead.(sounds so harsh, coming from a man of love; Emmanuel was saying to let the spiritually dead bury their physical dead).but go you and preach the kingdom of God..
Death is a thing of the world, of those in it who believe in death:.Matthew 22:32; Luke 20:38.
Luke 9:61 And another also said Lord, I will follow you, but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home at my house.

Luke 9:62 And Emmanuel said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Luke 10:1,2 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few. Pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

Luke 10:3-11 Go your ways. Behold.(take note; know that), I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes and salute no man by the way.(remember your purpose is of God and not to become buddy buddy with those you meet along the way or to go and pay a visit to someone along the way that you already know). And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

Luke 10:6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it, if not, it shall turn to you again.
Ask yourself about such meetings, how you feel about it.
Luke 10:7-11 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city you enter and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick that are therein and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city ye enter and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same and say, Even the very dust of your city which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you. Notwithstanding be you sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

Luke 10:12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.

Luke 10:13-15 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. And you, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shall be thrust down to hell.

Luke 10:16 He that hears you hears me and he that despises.(like, 'he's nuts, I don't want anything to do with him').you despises me and he that despises me despises him that sent me.

Luke 10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through your name.
What does "through your name" mean? What did the disciples do through His name?.Luke 9:1; Matthew 8:28-33.
Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning, fall from heaven.
The bad 'god' no longer had access as he and those like him once did:.Job 1:6-12; 2Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 12:9. Where did Satan fall to?.Job 1:7,8; Ephesians 2:2.
Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. And nothing.(original is 'no one' and 'not anything').shall by any means hurt you..(?)
Closer to the original and paraphrased: The first word 'power' in the original is 'power of choice', the choice being to head out through the land of snakes and scorpions and dealing with those who are against the message and in that, you would have power over such negatives and this second word 'power' is different than the first and means 'those who have the strength and ability' to hurt you.

Mark's account of it,.Barnes Notes:.Mark 16:18 "They shall take up serpents and if they drink any deadly thing,it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

The Psalms of protection are:.91, 46, 27. And don't forget the old favorite we learned in school, the 23rd Psalm.

The power of God's protection is such that we appreciate it, respect it and show that by not living carelessly. You don't trust in God to protect you and then live carelessly:.James 1:13. Closing your eyes and then driving, believing some wild animal can't hurt you and so not carrying a gun, etc. is living carelessly (example). People in their daily lives can also be this way by simply trusting authorities..Isaiah 30:1-18 talks about why they are so stupidly this way.

Barnes Notes: The verse is talking about preservation from danger. It's saying that if you tread on a poisonous reptile that would otherwise injure you, I will keep you from danger and if you go among bitter and malignant enemies that would seek your life, I will preserve you:.Mark 16:18.

The choice always was, choosing to get the message to others in a manner where nothing shall by any means be dangerous to you. And what wisely effective manner would that be?

Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you.(don't get all high minded over this:.1Corinthians 14:32), but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
That's the important thing.
Luke 10:21 In that hour Emmanuel rejoiced in spirit and said, I thank you Father of heaven and Earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them unto babes, for so this was good in your sight to do.

Luke 10:22 All things are delivered to me of my Father. And no man knows who the Son is but the Father and who the Father is, but the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal him..(?)

Luke 10:23 And he turned him unto his disciples and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see.
Matthew 6:22 "The light of the body is the eye. If therefore thine eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light."
Luke 10:24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which you see and have not seen them and to hear those things which you hear and have not heard them.

Luke 10:25,26 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? How read you?

Luke 10:27 And he answering said, You shall love  God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.
Matthew 22:36-40.
Luke 10:28 And he said unto him, You have answered right. This do and you shall live.

Luke 10:29 But he, willing to justify.(not wanting to be seen as being in error).himself.(Job 32:2), said unto Emmanuel, And who is my neighbour?

Luke 10:30 And Emmanuel answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead.

Luke 10:31-37 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine and set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence and gave them to the host and said unto him, Take care of him and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, think you, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Emmanuel unto him, Go and do you likewise.

Luke 10:38-40 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Emmanuel's feet and heard his word, but Martha was cumbered about much serving and came to him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

Luke 10:41 And Emmanuel answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things.

Luke 10:42 But one thing is needful and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
The physical things don't last, the eternal things do. Mary was concerned with things spiritual.
